Industrial Coatings and Plating

Several types of industrial coatings and plating are handled within the group including:  Hard chrome plating, sulfamate nickel plating, electroless nickel plating, black oxide and manganese phosphate.

Hard Chrome Plating

Hard chrome plating is essential to the long life of a wide range of parts and applications. Within the group, our platers specialize in hard chrome plating of cylinders, shafts, rollers, production parts, bars, rods, salvage and repair parts. Listed below are the maximum capacities:

Sulfamate Nickel Plating

Sulfamate Nickel plating is a dense coating of pure nickel that is relatively soft (20 Rc as deposited). A deposit of .001 minimum of Sulfamate Nickel to .125 of an inch can extend the useful life of an industrial part wither it is a corrosive environment or a salvage application. Sulfamate Nickel can be deposited directly to the base metal and can serve as a sealer layer prior to hard chromium plating or a bonding (soldering) layer for tin.

In a corrosive application a typical Sulfamate Nickel Hard Chrome rod with 0.0015" nickel and 0.001" Hard chrome per side will reach 1000 hours tested per ASTM B117. This would also have a rating of 10 per ASTM B537.  Listed below are the maximum tank capacities:

Width:  36"

Length:  84"

Depth:  60"

Weight:  2000 Pounds

Electroless Nickel Plating

Electroless nickel coating is used to protect against wear and corrosion. Electroless nickel is hard, uniform, and corrosion resistant. As deposited, electroless nickel has a hardness of about Rockwell C50. The deposit has excellent wear resistance, lubricity, and anti-galling properties. The deposit is a lustrous gray metallic color and may be brush finished to match stainless steel. The deposit is non-porous.

MID PHOSPHORUS ELECTROLESS NICKEL CONTENT
  • 7 to 9% (depends on age of Electroless Nickel bath and operating pH)

HIGH PHOSPHORUS ELECTROLESS NICKEL CONTENT
  • 9 to 12% (depends on age of bath and operating pH)

HARDNESS OF PLATING
  • As plated, 500 to 600 D.P.H. (48 to 50Rc)
  • Heat treated to 400ûC (750ûF) for 60 minutes. 900-1000 D.P.H. (60 to 70) Rc)

DUCTILITY OF PLATING
  • Will pass 180û bend test as specified by MII-C-26074 and ASTM B 571

Maximum Capacities:

Width:  30"

Length:  78"

Depth:  60"

Weight:  2000 Pounds

Black Oxide

Black Oxide is used as a temporary protective coating for various products, including screws and tooling. This process is performed primarily on steel, although it can also be performed on stainless steel, with varying degrees of success. Our hot dip process gives results that are superior to the room temperature processes used by some shops. Black oxide does not result in dimensional change, surface build-up or distortion and is available with oil or wax, depending on corrosion resistance requirements.

Black Oxide coatings are very limited in their ability to provide corrosion protection under even mildly corrosive environments. Black oxide is often used to provide shelf life corrosion protection for parts in storage. The corrosion resistance properties may be enhanced significantly by adding a supplemental corrosion inhibiting treatment.

The black oxide process produces a rich black surface. The gloss of the finish can range from flat to semi-gloss and is dependent mainly on the mechanical surface finish. A highly polished surface will have a much higher gloss than a surface prepared with abrasive blasting.

Parts processed with black oxide coating will generally not require any special dimensional consideration. Parts can be made to finished size prior to coating. The black oxide process converts some of the surface material into it oxide forming a ultra thin film much less the 0.0001" (actual thickness varies by alloy and process parameters).

Manganese Phosphate

Manganese phosphating is an oil absorptive coating that prevents excessive wear and seizing of surfaces during a break-in period. The most advantageous reasons for using manganese phosphate are the prevention of metal to metal contact, excellent oil retention and corrosion resistance, and superior lubrication during break-in.

Manganese phosphate is most commonly used on piston rings, camshafts, liners, differential gears, transmission gears, motor blocks and similar bearing surfaces.

Parts can be coated that are up to 55" in length.
